Two late stories by Jorge Luis Borges, “El otro” and “25 de Agosto, 1983,” each depict an encounter between two Borges characters of different ages. The standard reading holds that both meetings occur in double dreams and that the younger character forgets the encounter, leaving a single, unchanged timeline. Critic Ifraín Kristal has suggested the stories could generate temporal paradoxes and infinite regressions with non-identical cycles. This reexamination argues that Borges takes care to avoid any temporal paradox. The analysis considers political issues and Borges’s own translations of Chuang Tzu and Max Beerbohm, which Kristal invoked to support the idea of infinite regressions. Political concerns help rule out solutions that would have displeased the anti-Peronist writer.
