El hongo del rayo y trueno Amanita muscaria (Amanitaceae)
Biología y Sociedad July 1, 2026 Angélica María Hernández Ramírez
Amanita muscaria is an iconic fungus with a mythical connection to lightning. It spread from its ancestral population via three main routes, and its ancient bond with humans rendered it sacred, as shown in Mexican codices and artifacts. It contains psychotropic and toxic substances causing adverse health effects (mycetisms), yet epidemiological monitoring of incidental poisoning remains scarce. Traditional knowledge and practices have enabled its safe consumption and sale in local Mexican markets, though mushroom-gathering practices and related identification skills are being lost. This work offers a brief overview of Amanita muscaria and the importance of traditional preparation methods that make it safe for human consumption.
