A reinvenção do uso da ayahuasca nos centros urbanos

April 27, 2000 Beatriz Caiuby Labate 29 citations

Brazilian ayahuasca religions, especially União do Vegetal and Santo Daime, have spread to large urban centers since the 1970s and 1980s, and to other countries since the end of the 1980s. This process has led to new urban forms of ayahuasca consumption: small experimental groups using the beverage in psychotherapeutic settings, New Age experiences, arts contexts like theater and music, or even activities with homeless people in São Paulo. These emerging groups, termed neo-ayahuasqueiros, face a tension between rejecting traditional religious models of ayahuasca use and avoiding what they see as profane drug use.
