Liminal Landscapes: Generative Art as a Technoshanic Instrument in the Representation of Altered States of Consciousness

ARTECH November 26, 2025 Emília Simão, João Martinho Moura, Daniel Brandão

Generative audiovisual installations can evoke altered states of consciousness similar to those in shamanic rituals, according to a theoretical and practical analysis of the project Liminal Landscapes. The work uses organic, generative processes of image and sound centered on water as a metaphor for the unconscious, crossing, and transformation. Its circular structure and enveloping sound invite viewers into meditative states that break linear temporality. Drawing on visionary arts, ritual anthropology, technoshamanism, and media arts, the argument suggests that such installations function as mediators between visible and invisible, aesthetic and spiritual realms, proposing art as a technoshamanic instrument for sensitive knowledge bridging body, technology, landscape, and consciousness.
