PHILOSOPHY AND SOTERIOLOGY OF THE SCHOOL OF CHINESE BUDDHISM TIANTAI

Bulletin of the Buryat Scientific Center of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences January 1, 2023 L. E. Yangutov

Chinese Buddhist schools, particularly Tiantai, treat meditation as a soteriological practice inseparable from philosophy. The theory of two truths (conventional and ultimate) demonstrates how philosophical understanding and meditative realization are unified. In Tiantai, the practice known as zhi guan (calmness and insight) serves as the link between theoretical doctrine and practical cultivation, revealing that meditation is not merely a technique but an expression of philosophical insight. The article explicates how zhi guan embodies the unity of philosophy and meditation, showing that soteriological progress depends on integrating both.
