Assessing Metro Vancouver Residents’ Knowledge and Opinions of Psilocybin

BCIT Environmental Public Health Journal October 12, 2023 Payman Baharmand, Amardeep Kambo

Psilocybin, a naturally occurring hallucinogen found in various fungi, has gained social and political attention in the United States. Research suggests psilocybin combined with psychological therapy may offer promising therapeutic applications for mental illnesses such as major depressive disorder, addiction, anxiety, and obsessive-compulsive disorder. However, psilocybin remains illegal in Canada, and current data on awareness, opinions, and use among Canadian adults are insufficient. Further research on health effects and clinical use is needed before conclusions can be drawn. Addressing the lack of reliable information about psilocybin among Canadians would be a sensible starting point.
