Psilocybin and psilocin, naturally occurring in Psilocybe fungi, have been used historically in religious ceremonies and for pain relief. These compounds are increasingly replacing synthetic psychedelics like LSD because they are relatively harmless and do not cause physical addiction, though they remain illegal. They show therapeutic potential, but poisoning among young people is a clinical problem requiring rapid identification. Traditional morphological and biochemical analyses are often insufficient, so DNA-based methods such as RAPD, AFLP, and HRM, along with analysis of ITS1 and nLSU regions, are now used for fungal species identification. Modern chemical methods like capillary electrophoresis and chromatography are effective for identifying these substances in fungi and biological samples.

Psilocybin is a naturally occurring psychodysleptic substance found in mushrooms of the genus Psilocybe. It strongly affects perception, mood, and cognitive processes by stimulating serotonin receptors, increasing serotonin concentration in the brain, and intensifying sensorimotor and perceptual activity. Effects include euphoria, cheerfulness, lightness, and a sense of unity with the world, along with perceptual modifications often mislabeled as hallucinations. Its action is similar to but weaker than LSD. Psilocybin is classified as a high-abuse-potential substance with no medical applications, restricted to scientific research. However, studies with volunteers show it may be a good alternative to current antidepressants, demonstrating effectiveness and very low toxicity.
