The impacts of mind-wandering on flow: Examining the critical role of physical activity and mindfulness.

Mind-wandering negatively impacts flow, with a study revealing that 60% of participants reported frequent mind-wandering, leading to lower engagement in tasks. In a sample of 300 individuals, those who practiced mindfulness and engaged in physical activity showed significantly higher flow experiences—up to 40% more than those who did not. Physical activity and mindfulness were found to mediate the relationship between mind-wandering and flow, suggesting that enhancing these practices could mitigate the detrimental effects of mind-wandering on focused engagement.

Ketamine and esketamine may help reduce postoperative fatigue (POF), especially after major abdominal surgeries. However, this evidence is uncertain because the studies reviewed used different designs, measured fatigue in various ways and at different times, and had small numbers of participants. More rigorous randomized controlled trials are needed to confirm these effects and determine the best doses.

Esketamine for postoperative sleep disturbance: clinical evidence, mechanisms, and future directions.

Postoperative sleep disturbance (PSD) is a common complication after surgery, caused by personal, intraoperative, postoperative, and environmental factors, and it impairs recovery and long-term prognosis. Esketamine, a non-competitive NMDA receptor antagonist and the dextrorotatory isomer of ketamine, has stronger receptor affinity, more significant analgesic effects, and better safety than ketamine. Beyond its sedative, analgesic, and antidepressant properties, emerging evidence suggests esketamine may improve PSD through various mechanisms, though existing research results remain controversial. This article reviews the latest research progress on esketamine for improving PSD, discussing its clinical efficacy and potential mechanisms to guide perioperative anesthesia management and postoperative rehabilitation.

Ketamine for substance use disorders: a systematic review and meta-analysis

A meta-analysis of 15 randomized controlled trials with 798 participants found that ketamine treatment for substance use disorder (SUD) significantly improved abstinence rates in the short term (less than one month), but not at one to six months. Dropout rates and adverse events did not differ significantly between ketamine and control groups, though the available evidence was too limited to establish safety conclusively. The authors conclude that current evidence suggests a short-term efficacy signal for ketamine in SUD, but remains insufficient to establish its efficacy and safety definitively.

Decoding effects of psychoactive drugs in a high-dimensional space of eye movements in monkeys.

Daily injections of phencyclidine (PCP) at 3.0 mg/kg or ketamine at 0.8 mg/kg in two macaque monkeys produced robust reductions in accuracy and increases in reaction time during high cognitive-demanding tasks. Saccades, smooth pursuit, and fixation stability were significantly impaired; involuntary microsaccades during fixation increased in amplitude and were biased toward the lower visual field. Pupillary response during cognitive tasks was reduced, and sensitivity to auditory cues increased as shown by auditory evoked potentials. A machine-learning classifier identified altered states induced by different drugs with 93% accuracy, and 90% accuracy when data from one monkey trained and tested the other, demonstrating data transferability across individuals.
