Enhancing fertilizer-use-efficiency through fertilizer microdosing as climate-smart practices among crop farmers in North Central, Nigeria

Frontiers in Sustainable Food Systems November 18, 2025 Adetomiwa Kolapo, Isaac Busayo Oluwatayo, Wale Ayojimi et al.

Adopting fertilizer microdosing technology is associated with greater fertilizer use efficiency among cereal crop farmers in North Central, Nigeria. Analysis of farm-level data using Heckman and instrumental variable methods shows that a 1% increase in adoption of this technology corresponds to a 0.6% increase in efficiency, with similar elasticities for maize, sorghum, millet, and maize-sorghum. Adoption is more common among male farmers. The findings indicate that promoting fertilizer microdosing can reduce fertilizer waste and support climate-smart agriculture.
