Abuse of Dextromethorphan, Carbamazepine, and Naphazoline

The misuse of over-the-counter and prescription medications is a growing public health concern. Dextromethorphan, a cough suppressant, is abused for its dissociative and euphoric effects, leading to dependency and severe health risks. Carbamazepine, prescribed for epilepsy and bipolar disorder, is also abused for its euphorigenic properties. Naphazoline, an ophthalmic vasoconstrictor, is misused for psychoactive effects. Widespread availability, affordability, perceived safety, and lack of regulation contribute to this trend. The review calls for stricter regulations, increased awareness, and better pharmacovigilance to address the problem.
