Chemical basis of hashish activity.

Science (New York, N.Y.) August 7, 1970 R Mechoulam, A Shani, H Edery et al.

A sample of hashish was extracted with petroleum ether, benzene, and methanol. Only the petroleum-ether fraction showed activity when tested intravenously in monkeys. Further fractionation isolated Delta(1)-tetrahydrocannabinol as the only active compound. Cannabinol, cannabidiol, cannabichromene, cannabigerol, and cannabicyclol, when administered with Delta(1)-tetrahydrocannabinol, did not alter its activity under the experimental conditions. These results indicate that, aside from Delta(1)-tetrahydrocannabinol, no other major psychotomimetic compounds are present in hashish.
