Abstract

SUMMARY The evolution of a spiking focus induced by topical application of mescaline, as well as the concomitant alterations in the free amino acids in the two ectosylvian and the two marginal areas, were studied in cats pretreated with nonconvulsant doses of pentetrazol or caffeine. The spiking focus appeared earlier than it did in noninjected animals; the spikes were very frequent and irregular; in many caffeine pretreated animals, some short spike discharges appeared reminiscent of short focal seizures. Ectosylvian mescaline spikes elicited changes in free amino acids throughout the neocortex which differed in pretreated and nontreated animals. The glycine value increased significantly in caffeine‐ or pentetrazol‐treated animals. GABA levels increased under both circumstances, but significantly only in the pentetrazol‐pretreated animals; alanine increased significantly and arginine decreased only in animals previously injected with pentetrazol. In nontreated animals a decrease in glutamic acid, GABA and alanine levels was observed. RÉSUMÉ Chez des chats ayant préalablement recu des doses non convulsivantes de Cardiazol ou de caféine, on a suivi l'évolution d'un foyer de pointes induit par l'application locale de mescaline et les modifications concomittantes des amino acides libres, dans les deux aires ectosylviennes et marginales. Le foyer de pointes apparaissait plus tôt que chez des animaux n'ayant pas reçu préalablement d'injection de Cardiazol ou de caféne; les pointes étaient très nombreuses et irrégulières; chez quelques chats ayant recu préalablement des doses de caféine on a retrouvé de brèves bouffées de pointes paroxystiques semblables à de breves crosses focales. Les pointes induites par la mescaline dans l'aire ectosylvienne ont entraîné dans le néocortex des modifications des amino acides libres qui étaient différentes selon qu'il s'agissait d'animaux préalablement traités ou non. Le taux de glucose était augmenté de manière significative chez les animaux ayant subi des injections de caféine ou de Cardiazol. Le taux de GABA était plus é1evé dans les deux cas, mais de manière plus significative chez les animaux ayant subi seulement des injections de Cardiazol; l'alanine était également augmentée et l'arginine diminuée chez les animaux ayant recu uniquement du Cardiazol. Chez les animaux n'ayant pas subi d'injection préalable, on a observé une diminution du taux de l'acide glutamique, du GABA et de l'alanine.
