Advaita Vedanta answer to the hard problem of consciousness: A philosophical review

Yoga-Mimamsa January 8, 2021 Ravi Kumar Reddy Juturi

Modern science and Advaita Vedanta philosophy both treat the physical body and mind as material, yet the question persists of how insentient matter becomes conscious. Consciousness studies have become multidisciplinary, engaging brain scientists, neuroscientists, psychologists, philosophers, physicists, computer scientists, and AI researchers. The Upanishads, texts from about two to three thousand years ago, clearly described consciousness and its nature. This article discusses and demonstrates the nature of consciousness according to Advaita Vedanta philosophy, also covering the modern scientific standpoint. It attempts to answer the hard problem of consciousness from the Advaita Vedanta perspective.

The pineal gland is a small hormonal gland that acts as a master regulator of the body's cycles, though its full purpose remains mysterious. Research is revealing intriguing links between the gland and spirituality or higher states of consciousness. Descriptions of human anatomy from religious texts are frequently excluded from medical literature, but science may eventually validate many of these spiritual claims as grounded in scientific and medical fact.
