A UTILIZAÇÃO DA AYAHUASCA NO TRATAMENTO DE PERTURBAÇÕES PSIQUIÁTRICAS: UMA REVISÃO DA LITERATURA

Revista contemporânea April 17, 2023 João Moreno Vilas Boas

Ayahuasca is a powerful psychoactive brew used for centuries by Indigenous communities in South America for spiritual and medicinal purposes, made by boiling the ayahuasca vine and chacrona leaves. Growing interest exists in its potential as a treatment for psychiatric disorders, though its antidepressant and anxiolytic mechanisms are not fully understood. Researchers suggest it may act on serotonin, dopamine, and glutamate systems. Preliminary studies show promising results for depression, anxiety, PTSD, and substance abuse, but more research is needed to understand benefits and risks in clinical settings, standardize doses and preparation methods, and address legal and regulatory barriers.
