Technology-Mediated Hindustani Dhrupad Music Education: An Ethnographic Contribution to the 4E Cognition Perspective

Teaching Hindustani Dhrupad music through videoconferencing reduces opportunities for multi-modal engagement and interaction. Interviews with practitioners analyzed through 4E Cognition principles show that video-mediated platforms limit transmission of non-verbal, embodied, multi-sensory cues, and disrupt the sense of shared spatial and physical context. These limitations hinder effective interaction and immersion, which are vital in music education. The findings raise concerns about the suitability of conventional videoconferencing platforms and offer insights for developing alternative technologies that better support the embodied demands of oral music pedagogy.
