Research in Mindfulness Interventions for Patients With Fibromyalgia: A Critical Review.
Front Integr Neurosci July 28, 2022 Salomé Leça, Isaura Tavares 26 citations
Fibromyalgia, a common cause of widespread chronic pain, often includes depression and anxiety. While its neurobiological mechanisms are mostly unknown, mindfulness-based interventions (MBI) and mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) have been used as non-pharmacological treatments. A critical review of the literature finds that, despite a lack of well-structured longitudinal studies, some promising results indicate MBI can reduce negative aspects of the disease. Future research should include active controls, evaluation of sustained effects, investigation of neurobiological mechanisms, and detailed reports of adverse effects.
