Mysticism and Spiritualism in the Contemporary Era: Fostering Mental Resilience Amid Modern Challenges

Jurnal Iman dan Spiritualitas February 18, 2026 Panji Guniwa Aria Awangga, Muhtar Solihin, Cucu Setiawan et al.

Mystical and spiritual practices—such as meditation, kataphatic contemplation, and guided visualization—can cultivate resilience, emotional stability, and existential recovery by modulating brain networks like the Default Mode Network that govern emotional regulation, empathy, moral cognition, and autobiographical memory. When framed within coherent ethical narratives, these experiences help individuals adapt to trauma, loss, and identity crises, fostering transformative self-renewal rather than mere stress reduction. Integrating such practices into clinical care requires navigating ethical challenges including scientific validation, religious bias, and safeguarding patient autonomy across diverse cultural contexts. The paper argues for epistemological openness, interfaith dialogue, and cultural humility in contemporary psychological care.

Mysticism, Sufism, and Neurotheology: Bridging Spirituality and Modern Science

Jurnal Iman dan Spiritualitas November 24, 2025 Muhamad Atamimi

Sufi practices like remembrance (dhikr) and ego dissolution (fana') are associated with measurable neurological changes, including activation of the prefrontal cortex, increased theta brain waves, and reduced activity in the default mode network. A qualitative analysis of classical Sufi texts and contemporary neuroscientific research suggests that integrating Sufism with neurotheology can bridge spiritual and biological dimensions of religious experience. This integration supports transdisciplinary models for spiritual education and psychological therapy while preserving the depth of spiritual meaning and maintaining epistemological boundaries between revelation and science.
