The use of ketamine in psychiatric therapy

Ketamine, first used as a veterinary anesthetic in 1962 and later known as the recreational drug "Special K," has emerged as a promising treatment for major depressive disorder, especially treatment-resistant depression. This literature review describes two main forms: intravenous injections and inhaled esketamine nasal spray, both requiring repeated doses to maintain effect. Both forms have contraindications and side effects. The therapeutic benefit is weighed against risks. Ketamine's effectiveness in psychiatric treatment, particularly for mood disorders and pain conditions, is now proven worldwide. Its rapid action may also help prevent suicide in patients with major depression, a leading cause of disability.
