Psilocybin treatment for depression shows positive short-term effects and some longer-lasting benefits, but earlier long-term studies were less reliable due to small patient numbers or lack of blinding. A recent phase-2 study published in JAMA addresses these limitations.
Psilocybin shows initial evidence of effectiveness for chronic depression. Additional positive effects of this substance have already been demonstrated in other contexts. With now proven good feasibility, the authors encourage further controlled studies with this active ingredient.
