From Isolation to Social (and Psychedelic) Integration: A Sociology of Collective Effervescence and Therapeutic Community in Psychedelic-Assisted Therapy.

Psychedelic-assisted therapy often focuses on individual experience, but this theoretical paper argues that social dynamics are equally important. Drawing on Émile Durkheim's concept of collective effervescence—a shared emotional intensity that strengthens group bonds—the authors propose that psychedelic therapy can create a therapeutic community. This community helps transform feelings of isolation into social integration, which is crucial for mental well-being. The paper suggests that the social context of psychedelic healing, including shared experiences and support, may be as central to therapeutic outcomes as the drug itself, offering a sociological framework for understanding how psychedelics foster connection and belonging.
