Wastewater-based epidemiology in low Human Development Index states: bias in consumption monitoring of illicit drugs.

Wastewater-based epidemiology, which monitors community drug use by analyzing sewage, is expanding from well-managed networks in developed countries to non-advanced economies. This review provides toxicokinetic data for locally used narcotic drugs expected to emerge in developed nations, outlines excretion differences due to human genetic variation, and summarizes practical obstacles such as sewer coverage, maintenance efficiency, and network type. A case study from Martinique shows compliance with OECD health standards but not with population and urban dynamics, highlighting challenges for accurate monitoring in the global south.

Aqueous dipropylenetriamine (DPTA) captures carbon dioxide more effectively than conventional solvents such as monoethanolamine, 2-amino-2-methyl-1-propanol, and N-methyldiethanolamine, as well as newer polyamine solvents like aminoethylethanolamine, piperazine, and hexamethylenediamine. Vapour-liquid equilibrium data for CO₂ in DPTA solutions were measured at temperatures from 313 to 333 K and pressures from 1 to 100 kPa, with DPTA concentrations of 5 to 15 mass%. The electrolyte non-random two-liquid (e-NRTL) model, fitted using Aspen Plus data regression, predicted the experimental data with an average absolute deviation of 22.3%. The model also estimated solvent capacity, liquid-phase speciation, and heat of CO₂ absorption.

A magnetic shrimp shell biochar-based adsorbent was synthesized and used to extract trace psychoactive substances from municipal wastewater. The adsorbent showed good pH stability, anti-interference properties, fast magnetic separation, reusability, and reproducibility. A method combining magnetic solid-phase extraction with ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry was developed and validated for quantifying five psychoactive substances in real wastewater samples. The method achieved low detection limits (1.00-4.75 ng/L) and high precision. Applying the method to wastewater from Chongqing revealed that methamphetamine and 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine were the prevalent illegal drugs. MDMA concentrations and per capita consumption changed between July and September, but no weekly differences were observed.
