On cathedrals and alchemy: some modern interpretations of medieval iconography by Esprit Gobineau de Montluisant

A French alchemist and poet, Esprit Gobineau de Montluisant (c.1590–1665), argued that the sculptures on the main facade of Notre-Dame de Paris conceal alchemical allusions. His treatise, written while he was in contact with prominent political figures, emerged from a tradition blending alchemical theories, scriptural allegories, and an appreciation for decaying Gothic monuments. Gobineau's work continued to be read over subsequent centuries by alchemists, writers, art critics, and archaeologists, demonstrating its lasting influence. This case illustrates the importance of considering works linked to Western esotericism in the study of European cultural and scientific history.
