This period saw the beat generation of the 1950s transform into the hippie subculture of the 1960s. A pivotal event was beatnik Neil Cassidy joining Ken Kesey's commune, the Merry Pranksters. Their 1964 bus trip, called "Further," acted as a catalyst for this cultural shift.
