The Resurgence of Hallucinogen Drugs in Clinical Research.

Revista de investigacion clinica; organo del Hospital de Enfermedades de la Nutricion January 1, 2023 María T Rivera-García, Silvia L Cruz 8 citations

Classic hallucinogens such as LSD, dimethyltryptamine, psilocin, and mescaline have chemical structures similar to serotonin and directly activate 5-HT2A receptors. Ketamine, a dissociative anesthetic, has antagonist effects at the glutamatergic N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor and indirectly activates 5-HT2A receptors. Ketamine shows rapid antidepressant effects and reduces suicidal ideation, but these effects are short-lasting. Other hallucinogens are under study. The review calls for continued research with more rigorous methodology and inclusion of long-term effects.
