The article examines one of the most important cases on the scope of religious freedom decided by the U.S. Supreme Court in the last century. The plaintiff, União do Vegetal, is a religious institution originating in Brazil that makes sacramental use of the Hoasca tea, popularly known as ayahuasca, which contains trace amounts of dimethyltryptamine (DMT), a psychoactive alkaloid listed in Schedule I of the 1971 Convention on Psychotropic Substances and prohibited by U.S. law. The Supreme Court unanimously affirmed the Tenth Circuit's decision authorizing the use of Hoasca tea in União do Vegetal's rituals.
