The Santo Daime liturgy can be understood as a "cultural formation of compromise," a concept inspired by Carlo Ginzburg and Sigmund Freud. The historical and syncretic process that gave rise to this Brazilian religion is analyzed, situating it within cultural translations between indigenous knowledge and popular Catholicism. A genealogy of ayahuasca use identifies three main moments: autochthonous use among indigenous peoples, appropriation by white settlers in Putumayo, and institutionalization in Brazil as a religion. The sung liturgy of Santo Daime functions as a space for negotiation and cultural translation, where Christian and indigenous elements are articulated in a hybrid and conflictual formation, reflecting strategies of resistance and adaptation to colonialism and dominant power.
