Ibogaine as a Treatment For Alcohol Use Disorder: a Preclinical Investigation

A single administration of ibogaine, a psychedelic compound from the Tabernanthe iboga plant, produced a weak dose-dependent reduction in ethanol drinking during its acute effects in Sprague Dawley rats, but did not cause significant long-term reductions. Ibogaine also significantly increased QT interval and altered heart rate during its acute effects, indicating cardiotoxic side effects. The findings highlight the need for further research into ibogaine's therapeutic efficacy and cardiovascular risks at different doses.
