Psychedelic Drug Therapy for Mental Disorders?

An expert review argues that the clinical trials used by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the Australian Therapeutic Goods Administration to approve psilocybin for depression and MDMA for PTSD are irretrievably flawed, and that all future trials following the same methods are bound to be flawed as well. The review concludes that psychedelic drug studies have provided no trustworthy evidence of effectiveness for treating mental disorders and are unlikely to produce such evidence. It also contends that psychedelic therapy is impractical due to specialized training requirements and high costs, and dangerous because publicity about effectiveness may lead to unsupervised self-dosing with illegal drugs that have a high addiction rate.
