What is the clinical evidence on psilocybin for the treatment of psychiatric disorders? A systematic review

Porto Biomedical Journal January 1, 2021 Henrique Castro Santos, João Gama Marques 37 citations

A systematic review of clinical trials found that psilocybin shows a relatively safe profile and promising therapeutic effects for psychiatric disorders, particularly depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and substance use disorder (tobacco and alcohol). The most solid evidence comes from three randomized controlled trials on depression, which demonstrated reductions in psychiatric rating scale scores. Studies on OCD and substance use disorder showed more limitations due to their open-label design. The results suggest substantial therapeutic potential, calling for further research to confirm these findings and explain underlying mechanisms.
