Ayahuasca, a psychoactive brew traditionally used in Amazonian indigenous cultures, is typically made from Psychotria viridis and Banisteriopsis caapi. Its effects stem from N,N-dimethyltryptamine (DMT) acting on serotonin receptors, combined with β-carbolines that inhibit monoamine oxidase A. This review of literature from 2012 to 2022 found evidence for therapeutic effects on depression, anxiety, chemical dependency, alcoholism, and Parkinson's disease, along with neuropsychological effects and possible toxic effects on reproduction and embryonic development. Most publications addressed depression and anxiety. Further research is needed on ayahuasca's mechanisms and safety.
