Ibogaine, a psychoactive alkaloid from the root bark of the African shrub Tabernanthe iboga, shows anti-addictive effects based on animal experiments and anecdotal human reports. Its pharmacology is complex, affecting multiple neurotransmitter systems simultaneously, though the targets underlying its actions are not fully understood. Ibogaine is rapidly metabolized into noribogaine. This review covers the drug's physicochemical properties, bio-analytical methods, and pharmacology, focusing on its use as an anti-addictive agent.
