A systematic critical review of consciousness science from 1995 to 2025 maps four major theoretical frameworks—Integrated Information Theory, Global Workspace Theory, Orchestrated Objective Reduction, and the Free Energy Principle—alongside the experimental timeline of neural correlate research and emerging fields of quantum biology and brain biomineralization. The COGITATE adversarial collaboration substantially challenged key predictions of both IIT and GWT, but neither theory is confirmed nor falsified. Quantum theories of consciousness remain speculative but no longer categorically implausible; quantum biology has established functional quantum effects in warm biological tissue.
This working paper outlines three testable experimental proposals that address long-standing gaps in consciousness science at the intersection of brain biomineralization, quantum biology, and neural correlates of consciousness. Proposal 1 involves an in-vivo QSM study in patients with disorders of consciousness undergoing deep brain stimulation, correlated with thalamic firing patterns, followed by post-mortem SQUID magnetometry to distinguish total iron from biogenic magnetite. Proposal 2 tests a 22-year-old hypothesis by measuring piezoelectric response in human pineal calcite using PFM, correlated with RS1 expression and connexin-36 density. Proposal 3 measures regional brain magnetite state in rats at anesthetic-induced unconsciousness, comparing isoflurane with epothilone B pre-treatment, which delays loss of consciousness by about 69 seconds. Each proposal is technically feasible with existing infrastructure and independently meaningful regardless of outcome.
