Simultaneous determination of nineteen hallucinogenic tryptamines/beta-calbolines and phenethylamines using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and liquid chromatography-electrospray ionisation-mass spectrometry.

Analytical methods using GC-MS and LC-ESI-MS were developed to detect 19 tryptamines, beta-carbolines, and phenethylamines, including both controlled and typically non-controlled substances in Japan. These methods were applied to 99 kinds of products (123 total) purchased from adult shops or online in Japan over two years, which advertised psychotropic effects. Extracts were analyzed after methanol ultrasonication and filtration. 5-MeO-DIPT ("Foxy") was found in 8 of the 99 product types. AMT, DMT, harmine, and harmaline were also detected in some products. The methods are useful for monitoring the market distribution of non-controlled psychotropic substances.
