A Near-Death Experience Scale originally developed in English was translated into Brazilian Portuguese and tested for semantic equivalence. Two psychologists and two psychiatrists evaluated the translated version and confirmed that it matched the original in general and referential meaning. The scale was then pre-tested with six patients discharged from an intensive care unit at a university hospital, who demonstrated good comprehension of the items. The scale is therefore considered culturally appropriate for use in research on near-death experiences in Brazil.
