Chemical dependency continues to be a major public health problem. Current approaches to treating addictive disorders have not shown high rates of efficacy , and it is therefore vital that novel methods of therapy be explored and developed. lbogaine is a naturally occurring compound that is currently being studied for use in the treatment of a variety of substance addictions , including opiate , cocaine, alcohol, and nicotine. The purpose of this paper is to provide a comprehensive background of the current research available on the history, pharmakinetics, pharmacodynamics , toxicology , and effectiveness of ibogaine.
